Step 1 — Visual and Dimensional Inspection at the Dock
Butyl sealing tape is a deceptively simple product to receive. It arrives on pallets, in cartons, wound on cores, and it looks broadly the same whether it is perfectly compounded or badly stored. That is exactly why a written incoming inspection (IQC) procedure matters: by the time a defect shows up on the assembly line — a bead that will not wet out, a roll that telescoped in transit, a width that is 2 mm narrow — the cost of discovery has multiplied. A ten-minute check at the dock is the cheapest quality gate you will ever run.
Start with what the eye and a caliper can confirm, before anything is moved into production stock. The visual and dimensional stage should be pass/fail against written criteria, not against an inspector's judgement of the day.
- Carton and pallet integrity — Crushed corners, water staining, or a collapsed stretch wrap suggest the load was compressed or exposed. Photograph before opening; this is your evidence if a claim follows
- Roll geometry — Check for telescoping (the roll edges walking sideways out of plane), out-of-round cores, and edge crush. Telescoping is the single most common transit defect on soft, tacky tapes
- Release liner condition — The liner should lie flat, unwrinkled, and release cleanly. Wrinkled or partially delaminated liner usually means heat exposure or excessive stack pressure
- Bead surface — Look for embedded debris, dust contamination on the exposed face, colour banding, or any surface skin that looks dry rather than tacky
- Cold flow / edge ooze — Butyl is a non-curing viscoelastic material and will slowly flow under load. Slight edge ooze on a warm pallet is normal; material bridging between adjacent rolls is not
- Width and thickness — Verify against the purchase order with a caliper at three points along the roll. Garmy supplies widths from 15 mm to 300 mm and thicknesses from 1 mm to 3 mm, so the ordered dimension must be confirmed rather than assumed
- Label legibility — Grade, lot number, dimensions, quantity, and production date must all be readable and must match the packing list

Record every check on a single-page IQC form with the lot number at the top. If a dispute arises three months later, the form and the dock photographs are what settle it.
Step 2 — Sampling Plans, Tack Checks, and Functional Verification
You cannot test every roll, and you should not try to. What you need is a sampling plan that is proportional to the lot size, the criticality of the joint, and your history with the supplier. For a qualified supplier shipping a repeat grade, a light sampling plan plus CoA review is normally sufficient. For a first article, a new grade, or a safety-critical seal, tighten it.
- Define the lot — A lot is one production batch of one grade at one dimension. Never sample across mixed lot numbers; the whole point of lot control is that each lot stands or falls on its own
- Draw samples from different pallet positions — Top, middle, and bottom layers see different stack pressures and temperatures. Sampling only the top layer hides the exact defects that stack pressure causes
- Discard the outer wraps — The outermost two or three wraps of any tacky tape collect dust and see the most environmental exposure. Test the material your line will actually use, not the sacrificial outer layer
- Run the checks in a stable environment — Butyl tack and peel behaviour is strongly temperature-dependent. Testing a cold roll straight off a winter truck will give you a false failure; let samples equilibrate to room temperature first
- Document numerically, not descriptively — "Tack OK" is not data. Record thickness in mm, width in mm, and peel result in N/cm so trends across lots become visible

The functional checks themselves are short. A finger tack check confirms the surface wets out and grabs immediately — butyl should feel aggressively tacky and leave no dry, powdery residue. An unwind check confirms the liner releases cleanly without the bead splitting or transferring to the liner. A substrate adhesion check presses a short length onto a cleaned coupon of the actual production substrate — galvanised steel, aluminium, glass, or painted panel — waits a defined dwell time, and peels it back by hand or on a peel tester.
Where a numerical peel value is required, ASTM D3330 style 180° peel on a standard panel is the usual reference method. Compare the result against the supplier's declared value for that grade rather than against a generic industry figure — Garmy's tape-grade compounds are published individually, for example SD-1 at 42.82 and S-3 at 36.86 (N/cm, standard test conditions), and a lot should track its own grade.

Step 3 — CoA Cross-Check, Storage Condition, and Disposition
The last stage of incoming inspection is paperwork and environment — the two things most often skipped and most often responsible for field failures. A Certificate of Analysis (CoA) is only useful if somebody actually reads it against the lot in front of them, and a perfect lot stored badly for six months is no longer a perfect lot.
Cross-checking the CoA. Work through it line by line rather than filing it unread:
- Lot number match — The lot on the CoA must match the lot printed on the roll labels and on the packing list. A mismatch is an automatic hold, no exceptions
- Grade and application match — Confirm the grade named on the CoA is the grade on the purchase order. SD-1 and S-3 are both butyl waterproof tape grades but have different declared peel values, and substituting one for the other silently is a change you must catch
- Specific gravity within range — Garmy's tape-grade compounds are declared at 1.65 ± 0.1; a value drifting toward an edge across successive lots is an early warning worth raising with the supplier
- Temperature ratings — Heat resistance 110°C and cold resistance −40°C for the tape grades; confirm these still bracket your application envelope, especially if the end use changed since the part was qualified
- Production date — Needed to calculate remaining shelf life. A lot that has already spent most of its shelf life in a distributor's warehouse arrives with much less usable life than the date on your PO implies
- Signature and issuing system — A CoA issued under a certified quality management system (IATF 16949 / ISO 9001) carries traceability back to the production batch record
Judging storage condition on arrival. Butyl tape is chemically stable but physically sensitive. It softens and flows in heat, stiffens in cold, and picks up dust wherever it is exposed. What you are looking for is evidence of what happened between the factory gate and your dock:
- Check whether the container arrived hot. Sea freight containers routinely exceed ambient temperature by a wide margin, and a heat-soaked pallet shows itself as liner wrinkling, edge ooze, and rolls that resist unwinding cleanly
- Check for condensation. A load that travelled from cold to warm may show surface moisture inside the wrap. Let it fully dry before any adhesion test, or you will measure the water rather than the tape
- Move accepted stock to controlled storage immediately — cool, dry, out of direct sunlight, stored flat or upright as the supplier specifies, and never stacked beyond the recommended layer count
- Apply FIFO by production date, not by receipt date. Receipt order and manufacture order are not the same thing once you have multiple suppliers or a distributor in the chain
Disposition. Every inspected lot ends in one of four states, and each needs an owner and a date: accept (release to stock), accept with concession (documented deviation approved by engineering), quarantine (held pending supplier data or retest), or reject (non-conformance report raised, supplier notified, return or scrap agreed). The discipline that separates a functioning IQC from a paper exercise is that quarantine has a deadline. Material that sits in quarantine indefinitely eventually gets used by someone in a hurry.

Q: How many rolls should we sample from an incoming butyl tape lot?
A: It depends on lot size and risk. A workable baseline for a qualified supplier and a repeat grade is 2 rolls up to 50, 3 rolls up to 150, 5 rolls up to 500, and 8 rolls above that — drawn from different pallet layers. Tighten to roughly two to three times that count for a first article, a new grade, or a safety-critical joint, then relax back once several lots run clean.
Q: Is slight edge ooze on the roll a reason to reject the lot?
A: Usually not. Butyl is a non-curing viscoelastic material and exhibits slow cold flow under stack pressure, so a small amount of edge ooze on a warm pallet is normal behaviour rather than a defect. What is not normal is material bridging between adjacent rolls, liner that will not release, or beads that have deformed enough to change the effective width. Those point to excessive heat or stack pressure in transit and justify a hold.
