Roll-Level Packaging: Liner, Core, and Individual Protection
Butyl tape is a soft, permanently tacky, non-curing viscoelastic material. That is exactly what makes it a good sealant — and exactly what makes it a demanding thing to ship four to six weeks across an ocean. Unlike a rigid moulded part, butyl tape does not simply survive transit; it slowly responds to every hour of pressure, heat, and vibration it experiences. Export packaging is therefore not a cost line to squeeze. It is part of the product specification.
Protection starts at the individual roll, and each layer of the pack has a specific job:
- Release liner — The primary functional barrier. It keeps adjacent wraps from bonding to each other and carries the bead through unwinding. PET film liner is the usual choice for export because it is dimensionally stable and resists the heat and humidity swings of container transport far better than paper-based alternatives
- Core — The core must be strong enough that the wound roll does not collapse inward under its own stack weight. A crushed or ovalised core is the root cause of most "the roll will not unwind evenly" complaints
- Individual roll wrapping — Each roll shrink- or film-wrapped protects the exposed side faces from dust pick-up. This matters more than it sounds: a tacky edge face will collect airborne dust in a warehouse and that contaminated band becomes an adhesion defect at the joint
- Interleaving and separators — Where rolls sit side by side, separators prevent the edge bead of one roll from cold-flowing into its neighbour during a hot transit
- Carton strength — Cartons must carry the stack load rather than passing it to the tape. Double-wall board is the norm for export; single-wall cartons deform under sea-freight stack heights and transfer the load straight into the product
- Moisture control — Butyl itself is highly moisture-resistant, but condensation inside the pack contaminates the bond face and softens paperboard. A desiccant sachet in each carton is cheap insurance on long routes

One practical note for buyers: specify the packaging in the purchase order, not in a phone call. "Standard export packing" means different things to different factories. Widths from 15 mm to 300 mm and thicknesses from 1 mm to 3 mm all behave differently in a stack — a 300 mm wide, 3 mm thick roll carries a very different compression risk from a 15 mm narrow roll — so the pack spec should follow the dimension you actually ordered.
Palletising and Labeling: What the Importer Actually Needs
Once rolls are protected, the pallet becomes the unit of handling, and the label becomes the unit of information. Both are routinely under-specified, and both cause disproportionate trouble at the receiving end — a pallet that cannot be forklifted safely, or a carton whose label does not carry a lot number, will stall an incoming inspection before a single roll is opened.
Building the pallet. The goal is a stable cube that transmits as little compression as possible into the product:
- Use ISPM 15 compliant wood or plastic pallets. Untreated wood is refused at many borders and turns a routine clearance into a costly delay. Confirm the heat-treatment stamp before shipment, not after arrival
- Do not overhang. Cartons must sit within the pallet footprint. Overhanging cartons lose a large fraction of their compression strength and are the first to crush
- Column stack rather than interlock for heavy carton loads. Column stacking transfers load down the carton corners, which are the strongest part of the box; interlocking looks tidier but sheds compression strength
- Cap the stack height and state the maximum number of pallet tiers on the label. This is the single most effective control against cold-flow deformation in transit
- Add edge protectors and strapping so the load is a rigid unit, then stretch wrap with a top cap sheet against condensation drip
- Match pallet dimensions to the destination. 1200 × 1000 mm and 1200 × 800 mm dominate in Europe; 48 × 40 inch is standard in North America. A mismatched pallet costs the importer a re-palletising operation
Label content. A label is not decoration — it is the first record in the receiving customer's traceability chain. Every carton and every pallet should carry at minimum:
- Product name and grade — For example "Butyl Tape SD-1" or "Butyl Tape S-3". Grade must be explicit; the two carry different declared peel values and cannot be treated as interchangeable
- Dimensions — Width in mm, thickness in mm, length per roll, and rolls per carton
- Lot / batch number — Non-negotiable. Without it there is no CoA cross-check and no traceability, and a disciplined IQC will hold the lot
- Production date — Needed for shelf-life calculation and FIFO by manufacture date rather than receipt date
- Quantity and net / gross weight — For reconciliation against the packing list and for safe handling
- Storage and handling instructions — Keep cool and dry, avoid direct sunlight, do not exceed the stated stack tier count, store in the specified orientation
- Origin and manufacturer — "Made in Korea" plus manufacturer identification, required for customs and for the importer's own supplier records
- Barcode or QR — Optional but increasingly expected; it removes manual transcription errors at goods-in
Language matters too. Export labels are normally English as the working language, with the destination language added where local regulation or the customer's own warehouse system requires it. Agreeing the label template with the supplier before the first shipment costs one email and saves every subsequent receiving cycle.

Container Loading: Heat, Stack Pressure, and Transit Damage
The container is where most avoidable damage to butyl tape happens, and the two mechanisms are simple: heat and pressure. A sealed steel box sitting in the sun builds internal temperatures well above ambient, and everything at the bottom of a stack carries the weight of everything above it for the entire voyage. Butyl responds to both — it softens with heat and it cold-flows under sustained load. Combine the two and a perfectly compounded tape can arrive with wrinkled liner, bridged rolls, and deformed bead geometry.
Garmy tape is rated for an operating range of −40°C to +120°C, so container heat does not damage the polymer chemistry. What it damages is geometry — the tape stays chemically sound while flowing out of the shape you paid for. The controls that matter:
- Limit stack tiers — Define a maximum pallet tier count and print it on the pallet label. Most transit deformation traces back to someone double-stacking a load that was specified single-stack
- Load position within the container — Avoid placing tape pallets directly against the container roof or the sun-facing doors where temperatures peak. Centre and lower positions run cooler
- Block and brace — Fill voids with dunnage bags or bracing so pallets cannot shift and topple during a rolling sea. A pallet that falls over will deform every roll on the contact face
- Consider container liners on hot-season routes — Thermal liner blankets reduce peak internal temperature meaningfully on equatorial or summer routings
- Manage condensation — Container rain forms when warm humid air inside meets a cold steel roof. Desiccant units in the container, plus the per-carton sachets, are the standard mitigation on long routes
- Avoid mixed loading with heavy freight — Never let dense goods sit on top of tape pallets, and be explicit about this in the loading instruction rather than assuming the loader knows

Finally, align the packaging conversation with the Incoterm. Under EXW or FCA the buyer carries the transit risk, so the buyer should specify the pack level explicitly. Under CIF or DDP the seller carries more of it and has a direct incentive to over-protect. Either way, put the pack specification, the label template, the maximum stack tiers, and the loading instruction into the purchase order as written requirements. Every one of them is cheap to agree in advance and expensive to argue about after a container is opened.
