The second family of vocabulary lives on quotes, purchase orders, and shipping documents — not on lab reports. Getting these right prevents the most common (and most expensive) sourcing mistakes for beginners. Here is the order in which you will typically meet them on a real project:
- RFQ (Request for Quotation) — Your first formal message to a supplier asking for price and terms. Include width, thickness, grade, and quantity to get an accurate quote.
- MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) — The smallest amount a supplier will produce in one run. Custom widths or thicknesses often raise the MOQ because the line needs tooling setup.
- Lead time — Time from confirmed order to shipment. Standard stock is fast; custom specs add tooling and curing time.
- Lot / batch — One production run made under the same conditions. Quality is tracked per lot, which is why you may be asked for a "lot number" if there is ever a question.
- CoA (Certificate of Analysis) — A document certifying that a specific lot met its spec (peel strength, specific gravity, etc.). Automotive buyers almost always require a CoA per shipment.
- SG (Specific Gravity) — The density of the compound relative to water. It appears on datasheets and on the CoA as a quality-consistency check.
- Why MOQ surprises beginners — A "small trial" of a non-standard spec can still carry a meaningful MOQ because the production line must be set up regardless of run length. Ask suppliers whether a sample/trial batch is possible separately.
- Why CoA matters — It is your paper trail. If a downstream assembly fails, the CoA and lot number let everyone trace exactly which material went where.

Q: What is the difference between butyl "sealant," "tape," and "compound"?
A: They are the same family of material in different forms. The compound is the raw butyl rubber mixture. Tape is that compound formed into a ready-to-apply roll with a release liner. Sealant is a general word for any material used to close a gap and block water or air — butyl tape is one type of sealant. So "butyl tape" is a butyl sealant in tape form.
Q: Is "cold flow" a defect I should worry about?
A: Not by itself. Cold flow is the slow, gradual movement of non-curing butyl under pressure, and it is part of how the material keeps a gap filled over years. It only becomes a concern when a tape is oversized for a vertical joint and sags. Specify the correct thickness and cold flow works in your favor.
Q: What does "non-vulcanized" mean, and is it worse than vulcanized rubber?
